Not all stories and history are accurate and Lady Gregory knew it. She spent her life flipping Irish myths and histories on their heads, showing women as real, complicated, and powerful. From Grania, Kincora, and Dervorgilla, she made female voices that were driving the story, and shaping Irish identity, myth, and culture.
At the age of 80 years old in 1932, she passed away. Her life was dedicated to putting women at the center and reimagining old folklore. She changed how stories could be told. She made literature a place where women could have agency, history could be questioned, and myths could be reapproached. Lady Gregory’s work shows that the stories we inherit and are influenced by don’t have to define us.
